When working with patients in the office and their families, one of the questions we frequently are asked is: “How do I begin leading my family down a healthier path?” With so many things to think about it is very easy (especially with children involved!) to become totally overwhelmed and to give up before you even start the process of transitioning your family to wellness. So where do you start? Do you throw everything in your house away and start over from scratch? What part of your family’s daily life do you start to change first? Over the next few weeks we’re going to highlight some families and their journey towards wellness for their families. Today though, I want to give you some good tips and ideas for how to start down that path for you and your family.
Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day
The first thing to remember about trying to eat better, or live better, is to BE PATIENT!! “Rome wasn’t built in a day” as the old saying goes and neither is a meal plan for your family that is totally organic and health conscious.
The best starting point if you have never set one foot on the yellow brick road of health, is to formulate a plan. Everyone does better when they have goals and then when they write them down the chances of them actually completing them skyrocket.
So sit down with the family and decide what you want to accomplish. Decide a time frame you want to complete your mission in (or at least a phase of it). Then decide WHERE you want to start with your family. I recommend starting with one specific area of your families life, conquering that, and then moving on to the next area in need of a wellness make-over.
Next, as you cannon ball into the pool of uncharted waters with your family, STAY CONSISTENT!! You have to stick with your choices and changes and not compromise. Remember, you aren’t making these changes to punish yourself or your family, you’re doing this because you care about your family’s health and their future. The choices your children make today about what they eat and how they live will in large part determine what their habits as adults are going to be so parents, it’s up to you to show them the path to healthy living so that they make good choices for their health.
Friends Are Good
Lastly, when taking your family through the changes of switching from normal SAD diet (Standard American Diet), and from normal chemical laden household products to natural alternatives, DON’T TRY TO DO IT ALONE!! Seek out other people and families that are a little farther ahead of you on their journey and learn from them. Search out really knowledgeable medical professionals to help you tweak your plan
So stay calm, and take a deep breath! You can do this. The health and wellbeing of your family is dependant on you making a decision to start changing the current situation your family is in. In blog posts coming up over the next few weeks we’re going to cover alternatives for your family and will go over each area of your families daily lives and offer alternatives. So stay tuned!
